Chinese young people prove frugal in their consumption habits
Entering the harsh winter, people always wear down jackets (羽绒服) to keep warm. But as their prices soar (飞涨), another option has appeared. Recently, a video of college students in northeastern China wearing military-style coats went viral. The new trend has created a social buzz in China.
Pan Shu is a 34-year-old photographer who spends months working in western Sichuan province every year. “As an outdoor photographer, my down jacket easily gets dirty,” Pan said, “but the military-style coat is quite durable (耐用的). I feel free to go and pose however I want without worrying it will get dirty or worn out.”
Now the coat is an indispensable (不可或缺的) part of his equipment. “Besides, it looks quite handsome surrounded by the brown mountains and blue skies,” Pan added.
This trend signals a shift from consumerism (消费主义) to practicality. “It’s all about whether the product can meet my needs at an affordable and reasonable price,” said Liu Xinrui, a 15-year-old student from the Wuhan Britain-China School.
“The school I attend emphasizes economic studies. We are trained to study how brands operate so that we can see through their hype (炒作),” Liu said. She and her friend often compete to see who can buy the same product at a lower price. “We simply don’t want to be ripped off (被宰).”
More and more youth are waking up to the trap of consumerism. Although consumption is inevitable (不可避免的), it is important to focus on your needs first ‑ don’t let simply satisfying your desires become your main pleasure in life.
