当代译苑的恒久之光——追忆一代宗师奈达

本文为作者对今年8月逝世的美国著名翻译家尤金·奈达的怀念文章。作者回忆了与奈达相识后32年中的几次交往,表达了作者的缅怀之情。奈达的翻译理论,在中国以“翻译科学”、“动态对等”和“读者反应”3点最为著名,影响最大,也最有争议,作者梳理和回顾了国内对奈达的这3个概念的误读和误判,指出,“某个翻译理论的提出,一般都会有其语境性、特殊性和针对性。反过来,任何好的理论,不管它有何语境性、特殊性或针对性,一般也都同时会有它的合理性、普适性和超时空性”。“当我们在肯定或赞扬奈达的理论时,我们需要意识到它可能存在的局限和不足,不要盲从;而当我们在批评它的局限或不足时,却又不能妄加指责,把那些本来合理、优胜的部分也否定掉。尤其是,有些人在后言必称奈达时期,常常对奈达的一些核心理论横加批评、甚至彻底否定,如对他的动态对等论和读者反应论,可是他们又不拿出、或拿不出可以用来替代的更好的理论。对此,大家是需要忌讳的。”
奈达翻译理论研究》对奈达的翻译理论作了较为全面、系统的研究,对译界对它的研究状况和接受情况进行了梳理、分析,澄清了译界对奈达理论的种种错误认识,探讨了译界围绕奈达理论进行的论争及其根源。《奈达翻译理论研究》以奈达理论指导下的(现代英文圣经)和(现代中文圣经)中的诸多译例论证了奈达理论对翻译实践,尤其是对外汉翻译实践的指导意义,证明了我国译界认为奈达理论不适合外汉翻译的观点是错误的。《奈达翻译理论研究》对奈达理论和金陧理论的异同之处及其原因进行了深入探讨,对金译<尤利西斯)的得与失进行了分析,证明了奈达理论能够指导荚汉文学翻译实践。《奈达翻译理论研究》对奈达理论在汉英文学翻译实践中的局限性进行了有益探索,指出了奈达理论在文学作品的美学价值的再现上存在不足,并从美的形式特征和非形式特征两个方面阐明文学翻译如何再现原作美学价值的问题。
