2.1 The System at a Glance
1 Tiltable 6.5” TFT colour display
A tiltable TFT colour display is mounted on the top rear part of 睿鹰BV800. The angle of the display can be adjusted to a convenient position without any tools. For storage in the transport box, please tilt the display down, so it is in line with the surface of the 睿鹰BV800 top.
When the display is tilted fully down, you can see the rear panel of
睿鹰BV800 where the type and identification label and a clip to attach the unit to a neck strap are located.
2 Grab Handle with Focus Control
睿鹰BV800 provides a fixed zoom and the
internal optics allow the user to focus from
close range of 5cm to infinity.
During operation, the user can hold 睿鹰BV800 via a grab handle, made from a non-slip plastic material. Focus control is located at the front of the grab handle. Pressing the upper part of the button manually adjusts the focus towards infinity. Pressing the lower button moves the focus point towards a shorter focal length.
In the NIR mode, indicated via the message
IR CAM in the upper right corner of the display, 睿鹰BV800 features an Auto Focus function. This can be activated by a fast double-click on the upper or lower focus buttons. Auto Focus is activated for 5 seconds, indicated by the word AF also in the upper right corner of the display.
For the residual light amplifier mode, indicated by the word LUM CAM only a manual focus is available.
3 Residual Light Optics and Filter
At the front of 睿鹰BV800 you find two camera apertures, both fitted with different lenses. The lens on the left (here with a slightly blueish look) belongs to the residual light amplifier and is fitted by default with a band pass filter (SV/LUMDFLT1) suitable for the work with chemical reagents such as Luminol, Bluestar® or similar.
The operating life of residual light amplifier systems is negatively influenced by exposure to intense light and high temperatures even when switched off. A brightness sensor located at the front detects too high levels of brightness and switches off the light amplifier and shows a sun symbol.
This is only an indicator for the operator that the system is exposed to too bright light and not a protective measure.
Do not operate the system in temperatures > 50°C.
Do not use the LUM CAM (Residual Light Amplifier Camera) in bright light or direct sun light.
Keep the LUM Cam Aperture covered with the lens cap supplied with the system whenever possible.
Do only remove it when using the LUMI CAM.
4 Colour VIS and NIR camera optics with IR pass filter
The camera aperture on the right side belongs to the colour/IR camera. By default it is fitted with an IR pass filter (SV/IRFLT1), allowing to record images in the NIR from approx. 700 nm to 1000 nm. In order to take colour images in the visible range of the camera, simply unscrew the filter to allow visible light (and NIR light) to reach the camera. If you want to do a “naturally looking” photo, only showing the visual range of an image, you need to replace the NIR pass filter by a VIS filter (SV/VISFLT1), available as a chargeable accessory via Attestor Forensics. For details please see chapter 2.3 (page 12).
5 Light dome with red orientation light and IR illumination
睿鹰BV800 features two integrated light sources. For the use in LUM CAM mode, red power LEDs have been integrated as an orientation light that allows the user to move about at the crime scene without the need to switch on the room light.
The red orientation light supports a faster dark adaption or the human eye than day light or normal room light and can in most situation be switched on without influencing the LUM CAM image. It can be switched on in LUM CAM mode by pressing the + button and be switched off again by the –
button. The buttons left and right of the handle provide the same function and are designed for left handed or righted handed operation.
For the use in NIR mode, 睿鹰BV800 is fitted with intense 850nm IR illumination. Operating the + button in NIR mode automatically switches on the IR illumination which in this mode, for health and safety reasons always is combined with the red orientation light. Combining the IR light, invisible to the human eye with the intense visible red light, the human eye reacts with protective reflexes as the iris and blink reflex. The use of IR protection and safety goggles is not required.
Via the + and – button, the intensity of the IR light can be adjusted in 5 steps, indicated in the lower left corner of the display by a sym-
bol with changing appearance as below. The intensity is reduced by the system automatically if the battery has reached low charge (see page 10).
6 Instrument Base with Embedded PC
The base of 睿鹰BV800 does host a MicrosoftTM Windows® 7 compatible PC. The system has been designed to operate without any cooling fan, whilst the housing of the base is made from metal it is normal for it to develop some temperature. Various temperature sensors inside 睿鹰BV800 monitor the temperature. If it raises over a certain level, the temperature warning
symbol (pictured on the right) is displayed in yellow. The system maintains operative but it is recommended that the user finishes the current task and shuts down the system for cooling. If this warning message is ignored and the temperature climbs further, the temperature warning label is displayed in red and the system will perform a controlled shut down.
Below the socket for the power cable you find a plastic cover which opens by pulling the lower edge towards you. Behind this flap you find a monitor port, two USB sockets and a port for LAN connection. Further details about downloading images and video files via these ports can be found in chapter 3.4 (page 17).
7 Control Keypad
An easy to clean membrane keypad has been integrated in the base of 睿鹰BV800. The +, - and M buttons left and right of the handle are identical and can be used for left or right handed operation.
The cursor buttons towards the power supply socket of 睿鹰BV800 is used to manage and operate the menu structure. For details see chapter 3.2 (page 14).
8 Battery Pack and Power Socket
Also integrated in the base of 睿鹰BV800 you find a power socket to connect the system to the battery pack included. The coiled cord fits the socket only in one position and cannot be plugged-in incorrectly. More details can be found in chapter 2.2 (page 10).
9 Light Dome with Snap Shot and Video Recording Button
At the front, below the camera lenses 睿鹰BV800 features a light dome with integrated IR and red orientation light. On the rear of the light dome a metal button is visible. This is a sensor which is used to take snapshots or record a video.
When the user moves a single finger from the grab handle towards this button, a gentle touch triggers the capture of an image.
This is designed using a touch sensitive sensor to avoid any camera movement which could be the case by pushing a real button when operated single handedly. When a picture is taken it is displayed on the TFT screen in combination with the word REVIEW.
Holding the finger on this button for approximately 1-2 seconds, firstly captures an image and then initiates the recording of a video file. This is indicated by the word REC in the display. Recording is stopped, when the finger touches the sensor a second time.
2.2 Power Supply
睿鹰BV800 is powered by a battery pack consisting of the actual rechargeable battery, a fused adaptor that slides in at the top of the battery and a coiled cord con-necting the battery pack with the 睿鹰BV800. The parts of the battery pack assembled together fit into a pouch with a shoulder strap. The coiled cord can be used in either direction and fits the socket only in one position. It cannot be plugged-in incorrectly.
Read the manufacturers operating instructions for the battery and the charger, supplied with this unit prior to using it.
The battery features an indicator for the charge left in the battery. It can be activated by pressing the button on the battery. The charge indicator is replicated symbolically in the lower right corner of the 睿鹰BV800 display as pictured below.
When the battery has reached low charge (one yellow bar) the system automatically limits the IR light intensity to level 2.
When the battery has reached the critical charge (one red bar) the system will perform a controlled shut down within 3 minutes.
To recharge the battery, simply push the battery completely to the stop positon onto the sliding seat of the battery recharger. The operating indicator (see picture right) flashes.
Once the charging process has finished, the battery charger automatically switches to conservation mode. The battery can remain in the battery charger and therefore is always ready to use.
If the warning indicator (see picture right) lights up continuously, the battery will not be charged because the temperature is too high or too low.
When the battery has reached a temperature between 0°C and 50°C the charging process starts automatically. If the warning indicator flashes, the battery is defective. Immediately remove the battery from the charger. The indicator might also flash, if the battery is not pushed onto the sliding seat correctly.

3. Control System
3.1 Membrane Keypad Operation
睿鹰BV800 features an easy to clean membrane keypad for the basic control. It is located at the top of the instrument base.
睿鹰BV800 is booted by pressing the OK button for longer than 2 seconds. After booting, the 睿鹰BV800 by default starts the IR CAM mode. In this mode, the user can utilize the 850nm IR illumination integrated in the light dome. Pressing the + button will switch on the IR illumination in the lowest intensity. Pressing the + button repeatedly increases the intensity of the IR light step by step, indicated by a light bulb symbol in the lower left corner of the display which changes the appearance with the level of intensity of the illumination.
Please note, a red light is always combined with the intense IR illumination for user health and safety. By this measure, no further protective equipment (e.g. IR safety goggles) are required. Therefore it is not possible to operate the IR light without the red visible light. The intensity of the IR light is reduced by pressing the – button. The intensity of the red light cannot be varied.
Pressing the M button for longer than 2 seconds changes the mode of operation. When in IR CAM mode, this switches the system to LUM CAM mode, used to amplify the chemoluminescence of Luminol and similar chemicals.
The word LUM CAM in the upper right corner of the display indicates that the 睿鹰BV800 is in LUM CAM mode.
In LUM CAM mode, the + button switches on the red orientation light. This can be used at the darkened crime scene for better orientation. This is again indicated by a light bulb symbol in the lower left corner of the display. In most cases it can be kept switched on without any negative influence to the imaging system. Pressing the – button switches off the red orientation light again. The light bulb symbol disappears.
The red orientation light can only be switched on or off. It is not possible to change the intensity.
3.2 Accessing and Operating the Menu Structure
When the 睿鹰BV800 is operational, pressing the OK button for longer than 2 seconds opens the menu structure of the software. The cursor buttons are used to move through the menu. OK is always selected to activate a selected function.
Image
Transfer – selecting this function initiates a transfer of all image and video files stored on the system to a USB memory stick present in either of the USB ports. If a USB memory stick is inserted in each of the USB ports the selection of the transfer function allows to select one of the drives, where one is named E:\ and the other F:\. For more details see chapter 3.4 (page 17).
Long Time Exposure – via this the exposure time for colour images with the colour/IR camera can be set between min 1 sec and max 30 sec [Note: for colour photography you need to remove the IR filter (SV/IRFLT19)]. After adjusting the required exposure time, long time exposure photography is activated by pressing the M button and selecting SET or directly via the OK button. The display shows that the system is in LTE mode. The setting remains active till the user changes setting back to “0” again or till rebooting. When “0” is selected, 睿鹰BV800 adjusts the exposure automatically.
Gallery
Review IR Images – this allows to browse through all recorded IR images. If there are no IR images in the memory, the menu is greyed out. With the buttons and the user can move through the gallery of recorded images. The images are usually displayed along with the symbol . By pressing the M button, the symbol changes to and for the data transfer moves the picture into the subfolder called DISCARD. By this, no picture will be deleted accidentally at the crime scene. Unmarking an image can be done by pressing the M button again. The disappears and the image will be marked with again.
The OK button brings you back to the menu structure again.
Review LUM Images – this menu works identically to the Review IR Images menu but displays all images recorded with the LUM CAM.
Review LTE Images – this menu works identically to the Review IR Images menu but displays all images recorded with in longtime exposure mode with the colour/IR camera.
Reviewing Video Files - There is currently no possibility to review recorded video files on 睿鹰BV800. Videos are recorded as AVI files and need to be replayed externally with a suitable program within the standard computer environment.
System
Wipe Image Data – after transferring data to an external memory stick, all image and video files stored on 睿鹰BV800 can be deleted. Selecting the delete function prompts the user to confirm the execution by selecting Start.
Config – this menu allows to enter the submenu for setting the time and date or to select the resolution of IR image recording (see also chapter 3.3 (page 17).
Shutdown – selection of this performs a controlled shutdown of the WindowsTM operating system. A shutdown can also be performed by disconnecting 睿鹰BV800 from its’ power supply. This is considered as safe and does not harm the hardware or software.
Service – allows access to the full Windows TM system for service reasons. This requires a password which can be received via Attestor Forensics or your local distributor. In order to enter the password a standard keyboard is required which can be connected via one of the USB ports.
About – displays information on software version, hardware version and firmware version. If you contact Attestor Forensics for support please have the serial number (printed behind the neck strap clip) and the info displayed via this menu handy.
3.3 Recording Images and Videos
Hold the 睿鹰BV800 in your hand so your index and middle finger can operate the focus control (see image top right). Pushing the upper button focuses on more distant objects, pushing the lower button moves the focus point to closer objects.
睿鹰BV800 adjusts the image exposure automatically by analyzing the entire image and setting it to a sufficient brightness. Should particular areas of your image be too bright or too dark, the camera exposure can be manually adjusted by the buttons and on the cursor pad on the base of the instrument. Independent of this the buttons and increase or decrease the brightness of the display.
In IR CAM mode a fast double click on either of the buttons starts Autofocus which remains active for 5 seconds, indicated by the word AF in the display. Moving one of the fingers forward and touching the metal button on the light dome (see 2nd picture from top) will save a photo of the relevant mode.
In IR CAM mode pictures will be recorded with a resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels. In the menu via System – Config – Snap IR a high resolution mode can be selected (see image page 14). It captures images in a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels. This setting remains active till changed by the user or till the next re-boot procedure.
In LUM CAM mode pictures are always recorded in a resolution of 1280 x 960m pixels. Also the live display always uses a resolution of 1280 x 960 pixels. Once a photo is recorded, it will be displayed for 5 seconds along with the word REVIEW. After 5 seconds the 睿鹰BV800 switches back to live mode. Keeping the finger on the metal snapshot button firstly records an image and then starts the video recording mode, indicated by the word REC in the display. Once recording has started, the finger can be removed from the button. The video recording continues until the snapshot button is pressed again which ends the video recording.
3.4 Retrieving Images and Videos
睿鹰BV800 automatically detects when a USB memory stick is inserted in either of the USB slots. Memory sticks with FAT32 or NTFS format can be used. 睿鹰BV800 starts a transfer dialog which can also be accessed manually via the Menu – Image – Transfer (see page 14).
When the transfer is activated, the software checks for sufficient free memory on the memory stick and prompts the user to start or cancel the file transfer.
Image files are transferred as TIF files, video files as AVI files.
IR and LUM images are always transferred as directly received from the camera system as well as in a filtered version where a noise reduction filter has been applied.
When all files are transferred the user can select whether to delete all files stored locally on the 睿鹰BV800 or leave them on the hard disk.
During the transfer the 睿鹰BV800 creates various folders on the USB memory stick with the following structure:
For each date of recording images or videos, 睿鹰BV800 creates a folder. The name of the folder is the date of recording in the format “yyyymmdd”.
Each folder contains up to three subfolders for each type of images or video present. They contain whether IR images or videos, longtime exposure images (LTE) or images or videos recorded in LUM CAM mode. Each folder contains files with names as illustrated below:
R20150814155036_001.***
sequential number, created automatically (here 001)
year (2015) hour (15)
month (08) minutes (50)
day (14) seconds (36)
Camera Mode IR, LUM, LTE (longtime exposure)
Each of the subfolders can contain a further subfolder named “DISCARD”. Here all files that may be marked by the user as to be discarded (see page 15) will be stored.
4. Care, Cleaning, Service and Maintenance
4.1 Safe Storage and Handling
睿鹰BV800 is a special forensic tool, intended for the search of blood stains and blood spatter at the crime scene but also in the laboratory.
睿鹰BV800 contains sensitive electronic components and in particular a high grade residual light amplifier unit. The operating life span of residual light amplifier systems is negatively influenced by exposure to intense light and high temperatures even when switched off.
Do not operate or store the system in temperatures > 50°C.
Do not use the LUM CAM (Residual Light Amplifier Camera) in bright light or direct sun light.
Keep the LUM Cam Aperture covered with the lens cap supplied with the system whenever possible.
Do only remove it when using the LUM CAM.
Use the system only for the intended purpose and only in accordance with the operating instructions. Use the system only with accessories and consumables supplied or specified by Attestor Forensics.
睿鹰BV800 is a viewing system that features a high intense near infrared (NIR) light source with 850nm. When the NIR illumination is activated, it is by default combined with an intense visible red light source. This combination allows the human eye to create a self-protecting aversion reaction (blink and iris reflex) which would not be the same with just the NIR illumination.
Test measurements in the direct light beam with a distance of 20 cm in front of the illumination gave radiation levels that are not harmful to the human eye. The use of 睿鹰BV800 is therefore safe and does not require protective measures like IR safety goggles or the like.
Independent of this protective feature we do recommend:
Caution: LED radiation! Do not stare into the beam or view directly with optical instruments.
睿鹰BV800 does not feature an IP rating. Do only use indoors or in conditions without exposure to moisture.
Power the equipment only from power supplies or batteries supplied or specified by Attestor Forensics.
Do not operate the equipment with damaged power cables, power supplies or batteries.
Do only recharge the batteries with a charger supplied or specified by Attestor Forensics.
4.2 System and Errors Messages
Temperature Warning
Various temperature sensors inside 睿鹰BV800 monitor the temperature. If it raises over a certain level, the temperature
warning symbol (pictured on the right) is displayed in yellow. The system maintains operative but it is recommended that the user finishes the current task and shuts down the system for cooling.
If this waring message is ignored and the temperature climbs further, the temperature warning label is displayed in red and the system will perform a controlled shut down.
Brightness Warning
A brightness sensor located at the front detects to high levels of brightness and switches off the display and shows a sun symbol.
This is only an indicator for the operator that the system is exposed to too bright light and not a protective measure.
During operation, the display informs the user about the charge left in the battery. When the battery has reached low charge (one
yellow bar) the system automatically limits the IR light intensity to level 2.
When the battery has reached the critical charge (one red bar) the system will perform a controlled shut down within 3 minutes.
4.3 Cleaning and Care
睿鹰BV800 contains optical and other glass components. Protect the equipment from damage and contamination. When not required for use, store the equipment in the transport box or. Handle the 睿鹰BV800 with care. Do not subject the 睿鹰BV800 to mechanical shock. Do not drop.
Remove dust and deposits from external surfaces using a soft dry cloth or paper tissue. When necessary, use a soft cloth or paper tissue dampened with a mild cleaning solution. Allow all surfaces to dry thoroughly before use.
Warning: Do not attempt to clean any optical surface as filters or lenses with abrasive cleaning materials or such containing strong acids or alkalis. Do not allow the ingress of liquids or other contaminants. Do not immerse.
4.4 Maintenance and Repair
睿鹰BV800 contains no user-serviceable parts and no user-replaceable parts other than the fuse in the battery adaptor. Only replace the fuse by a fuse with the same current value and the same characteristics.
Do not use spares, accessories and consumables other than those supplied by Attestor Forensics. Nevertheless for quality assurance and to maintain functional reliability we recommend a number of regular maintenance and service tasks to be carried out by Attestor Forensics personnel or a trained and duly authorized partner’s service engineer.
